Questions on Exodus 54: The feast of harvest and the feast of completion
What is the feast of the harvest of the firstfruits, and what is the feast of completion at the outgoing of the year?
He calls the feast of the firstfruits Pentecost, and the feast of completion at the outgoing of the year the Feast of Tabernacles. Teaching this he added: “Three times in the year every male of yours shall appear before the Lord your God”—that is, at the feast of Passover, at Pentecost, and at Tabernacles. Passover reminds them of the exodus from Egypt and of the freedom granted; Pentecost, of the entrance into the land of promise. For there they sowed and offered the firstfruits of the produce. In the wilderness they ate bread that was unsown and untilled. Tabernacles sketches their manner of life in the wilderness. For living in tents they completed forty years. At these feasts he urged them to gather together at the divine temple, so that they might both remember the divine gifts and be joined in concord and friendship; and that, being lovers of feasts, they might not revel around the shrines of the demons, but in the temple of the One who made them and supplies good things, enjoy festive cheer.
