Library Theodoret Questions on Exodus
Questions on Exodus 45: Why the Hebrew who refused freedom had his ear pierced
Why did he command that the ear of the Hebrew who did not wish to receive freedom be pierced?
He teaches them to prefer freedom above all things. So he orders that the one who does not cling to it but embraces slavery receive this mark for shame. Besides this, the sign also shows obedience through hearing, and being by the door shows that he is not permitted to go forth unless the master allows it.
