Library Eusebius of Nicomedia Letters and Fragments

Fragment of a Letter to Arius

Preserved by Athanasius, De Synodis 17 (NPNF). Eusebius of Nicomedia writing to Arius before Nicaea.

And before the Nicene Council took place, similar statements were made by Eusebius and his fellows, Narcissus, Patrophilus, Maris, Paulinus, Theodotus, and Athanasius of Anazarba. And Eusebius of Nicomedia wrote over and above to Arius, to this effect:

Since your sentiments are good, pray that all may adopt them; for it is plain to any one, that what has been made was not before its origination; but what came to be has a beginning of being.

English from Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, Series II: Theodoret, Ecclesiastical History (tr. Blomfield Jackson); Athanasius, De Synodis (tr. Archibald Robertson); Socrates, Ecclesiastical History (tr. A. C. Zenos); Ambrose, Exposition of the Christian Faith (NPNF). Public domain. Digital text via New Advent Church Fathers. In the letter to Paulinus, the clause κτιστὸν … τῇ οὐσίᾳ is aligned to the Greek where Jackson’s “in the same substance” is misleading.
