Library Theodoret Questions on Exodus
Questions on Exodus 25: Was the Red Sea divided into twelve parts?
Some say the sea was divided into twelve sections and that each tribe crossed by itself, and they think the blessed David meant this when he said, “who divided the Red Sea into divisions.” How should we understand it?
I myself think the sea was split in two. For this is what the divine Scripture also teaches: “the water was a wall to them on the right and a wall on the left.” The way became broad, proportionate to the multitude of those who passed through: “for he led them,” it says, “in the abyss as in a wilderness.” That shows the spaciousness of the road. Even so, that other account does no harm to the word of piety; for both this and that would be a work of divine wonder-working. Still, one must follow the truth of the divine Scripture. The most just Judge handed Pharaoh over to utter destruction through water, together with his whole army, because he had destroyed the infants of the Hebrews through water.
