Questions on Exodus 6: The bush burned but was not consumed
What does it mean that “the bush was burning and was not consumed”?
It proclaims God’s power and loving-kindness, in that the unquenchable fire did not consume what was like dry brushwood. I think other things are also hinted at through this: both that Israel, plotted against by the Egyptians, would not be destroyed but would prove stronger than those who warred against them; and that the Only-begotten, having become man and dwelling in a virgin’s womb, would keep the virginity intact. Some say God appeared in a bush and not in another plant because no one can carve a god from a bush. For it was likely that the Jews would have dared even this, if he had appeared in another plant.
