The Alogi named and their rejection of John

These people, then, are called Alogi (Ἄλογοι)—for I give them this name; from now on they shall be so called, and so, beloved, let us impose the name upon them: that is, “Alogi.”

For they had the heresy that rejects the books of John. Since, then, they do not receive the Word (Λόγος) proclaimed by John, they shall be called Alogi.

Being altogether alien to the preaching of the truth, they deny the purity of the preaching and receive neither John’s Gospel nor his Apocalypse.

And if they received the Gospel but rejected the Apocalypse, we might say that perhaps they do this from a kind of exacting scrupulosity, not receiving what is apocryphal because of the things said deeply and obscurely in the Apocalypse.

But since they do not by nature receive the books proclaimed by holy John, it would be clear to everyone that these are the ones, and those like them, of whom holy John said in the Catholic Epistles: “It is the last hour, and you have heard that Antichrist is coming; and now, behold, there are many Antichrists,” and what follows.

For these people make excuses, ashamed to contradict holy John, because they know that he is numbered among the apostles and was loved by the Lord, to whom he worthily revealed the mysteries and who reclined upon his breast; and they try to overturn these writings in another way. For they say they are not John’s but Cerinthus’s, and they claim they are not worthy to be in the church.
