Chapter 23
Panarion 51, Chapter 23: Thirty years confirmed by the consular succession
And you see that it is a period of thirty years. Therefore we have taken care to set down the successive consulships accurately, so that those who go through them may see that there is nothing fabricated in the divine dogma of the truth, but that all things have been preached to the church with accuracy.
For who, having numbered the consulships that cannot fail in sequence, will not condemn those who suppose there is disagreement in the number of years celebrated among the evangelists?
For this reason also the earlier heresies about Valentinus and certain others fell—those who mythically recorded the thirty Aeons, which they thought to liken to the Savior’s years, so that they might somehow be able to write up the mythology of the Aeons and beginnings among them.
For it is found that in the thirty-third year of his incarnate presence the Only-begotten suffers—being impassible God Word from above, but having taken flesh and undertaken to suffer for us, that he might loose the handwriting of death against us.
For after that consulship indicated in his thirtieth year there was another consulship, called that of the two Gemini; then another consulship of Rufus and Rubellio; and so, when the consulship after that of Rufus and Rubellio had come—which later came to be called that of Vinicius and Longinus Cassius—in his thirty-third year, which was the eighteenth of Tiberius Caesar, the Savior suffers on the thirteenth before the Kalends of April.
And the error of all these has been refuted, the teaching according to the truth being clearly found: that not only periods of two years of the Passover feast are reported in the Gospels, but also of three.
