אֲרַמִּי is the gentilic of אֲרָם: a person of Aram. Brown, Driver, and Briggs give Syrian or Aramean for the English habit that older Bibles used. The Hebrew is Aram, not the later Greco-Roman name Syria. In the WOTA Bible the base text’s “Syrian” and “Syrians” are printed Aramean and Arameans, and “Syria” for this noun is printed Aram.
Genesis 25:20 calls Bethuel and Laban Aramean of Paddan Aram. Genesis 31:20 and Genesis 31:24 keep the same word for Laban. Deuteronomy 26:5 is the firstfruits confession: “My father was an Aramean ready to perish.”
The place and people noun is אֲרָם. Where the base printed “Syria” or “the Syrians” for that noun, the WOTA Bible prints Aram or Arameans. 2 Samuel 8:5 has the Arameans of Damascus. Isaiah 7:1 has Rezin king of Aram.
The language is אֲרָמִית. 2 Kings 18:26, Ezra 4:7, and Daniel 2:4 print Aramaic, not “Syrian.”
Luke 4:27 has Greek Σύρος of Naaman. That is the same figure as 2 Kings 5:20, so the WOTA Bible prints Aramean there too. New Testament Συρία for the Roman province stays Syria; that is not this Hebrew word.
In the WOTA Bible, “Aramean,” “Arameans,” “Aram,” and “Aramaic” link here only in the verses where the Hebrew is אֲרַמִּי, אֲרָם, or אֲרָמִית, or where Luke’s Greek is Σύρος of Naaman.
